Salad Saturdays: Changing Textures

Saturday, July 27th, 2013

We hope everyone’s been enjoying their summer (and their salads) so far! Up until now, most of the featured cheese parings have been creative variations of a salad staple: goat cheese. This Salad Saturday, we hear from Baker-turned-cook and Food blogger, Marnely Rodriguez-Murray. She writes for Marcus Samuelsson’s Food Republic and Honest Cooking Magazine and her beautifully photographed site can be found at CookingwithBooks.net

By now, you’re asking yourself “what is the cheese that sits atop Marnely’s summer salad?”

Nothing better than blue cheese crumbles over a crisp summer salad! The tangy cheese balances out flavors & adds texture to the meal! Even better? Try making your own blue cheese dressing for dips and salads – refreshing and delicious!

Mixing textures in a salad can really make it memorable, and that includes switching up the texture of the dressing! If you’re up for creating your own blue cheese dressing, You can pick up some blue cheese like Ile de France Roquefort cheese and try this recipe by Anjali Prasertong  for theKitchn.

It’s Time for Fall Beers (and Cheese!)

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Mug of beer on a pub table

Fall seasonal beers – which are more flavorful and substantial compared to lighter summer beer – are getting more and more popular.

Traditionally, one of the best complements for any beer is a nice flavorful cheese, and that’s especially true with robust fall seasonal beers. They naturally taste great together!

They complement each other because they share some common characteristics in both aroma and flavor. The carbonation in beer lifts the palate and brings out many nuances in cheeses.

So before savoring an invigorating fall seasonal beer and cheese pairing let’s think how can we combine them. First and foremost use your own personal preference whether you are cooking with cheese or just savoring alone.

Try pairing complex beers with complex cheeses. You can also try and make a perfect match or play around and make subtle contrasts. For instance, delicious and bold Pumpkin beer makes a perfect match with bleu cheese, such as Roquefort or Bleu d’Auvergne – the saltiness of the cheese is an excellent contrast to the sweet notes of the pumpkin beer.

Check out our fall seasonal beers and cheese guide for more interesting ideas about beer and cheese pairings.
