Yesterday we got a very intriguing question from our Twitter follower Elizabeth (@JMZNLIZ)! The question was: “can you make taco shells out of cheese? Do you know how?” And you know what? We were stuck!
Traditionally taco shells are made out of flour or corn. Of course there is some modern ways to make taco shells, for example, oats, rice, garbanzo beans make distinctive substitutes for traditional taco shells.
Some brief online research also revealed that taco shells made with cheese are actually quite popular. A number of people have generously shared their cheese taco shells recipes on blogs and recipe sites. Brian Davis’s Food.com article “Low Carb Taco Shells” looks especially delicious and is also easy to make!
All you need is to melt a slice of cheese in a microwave for approximately one or two minutes, which forms a Taco shell while the cheese is still flexible. The author used Cheddar cheese in his recipe but you can use any cheese that melts easily. For example Fol Epi or Comté and other pressed cooked cheese work well and are mild yet flavorful.
So now we all know the simple secret of cheese taco shells and can easily surprise our friends by treating them with especially cheesy home made tacos!
